Musa lasiocarpa is a very attractive plant with beautiful large, glaucous paddle shaped leaves. This dwarf banana tree is originally from the Himalayas, its great for the UK climate just needing a good thick mulch around the roots in winter and a little protection around the trunk and foliage if left outside in colder gardens. The leaves will be knocked back by the frost but the roots will remain hardy.
This Musa will slowly produce large yellow bracts which resemble the lotus flower, when this happens the mother plant dies back but produces lots of off shoots which grow on to become another yellow banana tree. Musa lasicarpa is more wind tolerant than other banana trees. Great for the 'tropical' garden and great for growing in pots. Plant in a moist retentive but well drained soil in full sun to partial shade.
